Interesting article from TODAY 6:24 PM

    SINGAPORE 2016

If any city can hold the Olympics, we can!

BY now, the world will be aware that the 2012 Olympics will be held in London, and forgotten where this great announcement was made. Don't get patriotic on me, okay? I ask you, where was the venue for the 116th IOC Session when Beijing won the vote to host the 2008 Olympics? You cannot remember, right?

For a moment there, watching the hype surrounding Singapore's involvement as the venue for the closely-fought 117th IOC session, you would think we are hosting the Olympics itself.

Some of you must be thinking now, don't be silly, Singapore is too small. Come, we must up the ante. If any city can do it, Singapore can! What better city to host the 2016 Summer Olympics than Singapore, Land of Perpetual Summer?

Singapore's land area too small for the Olympics? No problem. We can reclaim. Reclaim till Sentosa and the Southern Islands are no longer islands, then we make a left turn near Indonesia and reclaim till we reach Australia.

To accommodate the world's athletes, we will house them in our Olympic Village, in Punggol and Sengkang. I hear there are a lot of unsold empty flats there - 10,000 unsold HDB flats in Singapore should be enough for housing the champions of tomorrow.

Transport should not be a problem either. The Singapore transport system is world-class.

We can even hold events at midnight now, because with the taxi midnight surcharge moved to 11.30pm and staggered, athletes should have no problem getting taxis for their midnight events.

But good luck trying to get a taxi from 11pm to 11.30pm.

Besides taxis, you can also take the Never-ending Circle Line, which will be complete, hopefully, by 2016. My favourite MRT station name so far: Dakota (named after some plane). American visitors and athletes coming for the 2016 Singapore Olympics will feel right at home there.

Of course, no Olympics will be complete without a new stadium. We will build a new stadium, and it will be called The Rambutans, the world's first hairy stadium. It will be designed by renowned architect, I.M. Paid. The inspiration is that to compete in the Olympics, you must have balls, and what better way to depict this than by having a stadium shaped like a pair of hairy, er, fruit?

The smaller new stadium, The Papayas, will supplement this.

Do not worry, both new stadiums will be seedless.

Here are some ideas for events for Singapore 2016. To save space, we could have the running events on the underground MRT tracks.

Runners will still have to contend with trains coming up from behind them though. Singapore is a very efficient country, and trains must continue running no matter what. I suggest the short distance running events be held in the morning rush hour when the trains are about 3 minutes apart.

For longer distance runs, I suggest the off-peak afternoons, when you have to wait 5 to 8 minutes between trains.

I am sure we will see some new world records as a result of this.

For pole vaults, we can do it at the ERP gantries. However, jumpers will still have to ensure that they have sufficient balance in their CashCards because the ERP gantries will still deduct the toll charges.

And of course, we cannot forget the Integrated Resorts (IR) aka Casinos. By 2016, I am sure they will be up and running, so we can host a few events there as well. We can hold the swimming events at the mahjong tables, the ball games at the roulette table, and a new Olympic sport, Horse Racing.

I know some of the IR events sound controversial. Don't worry, we will consult Singaporeans first before we come up with any casino decisions.

We will also throw in a new Olympic song (in English and another language of your choice), that will be performed by our local artistes. They will lip-sync to the song while dancing a silly mass dance we will invent for it. We promise to play this song and its music video on TV and radio at least twenty times a day for a whole month.

We will also close all the major roads in the city, so that we can rehearse the Opening and Closing ceremony at least seven times. It's okay, our citizens are quite used to it.

And of course, we will open the torch run with our one and only Olympics medalist, Tan Howe Liang. Sorry, he is the only one we have so far, and we take him out once every four years, to interview him and then we put him back in the special Singapore Olympic cupboard.

When young Singaporeans see how we treat our Olympic medallists, sorry, medalist, they will surely be inspired to take up sports as a career.

The IOC need not worry about demonstrations and protests taking place here during the 2016 Olympics. In Singapore, you need a licence for that sort of thing, and I have a funny feeling the application counter for Protests and Demonstrations Licensing (PADL) will be closed during the run-up to the Singapore Games.

You know we are hot. So vote Singapore for the 2016 Summer Olympics now.

mr brown is the accidental author of a popular website that has been documenting the dysfunctional side of Singapore life since 1997. He thinks they should bring back the female Beach Volleyball event for the Singapore 2016 Olympics.
